Five Ways to Transform Your Home

2016-08-25-BLOG

With all that goes on in our world, the chaos of traffic, the hustle and bustle of the city, the stress of work, it is important to have our little sanctuary that will help us decompress. Usually our home is that place; therefore it is important that we make our home a peaceful one. There are a few steps we can take to make sure that our home is a place that help us relax, calm down and destress.

First step is to make sure that we check the stressors at the door. You shouldn’t take the mess of the outside world inside. Work stays at work, that person that cut you off while driving is left on the road anything that makes your shoulders tense up gets left outside the door. you can pick it right up on your way out if you want, but why would you want to?

HW0_372743

Second step is to make your home the peaceful place it should be. There are several ways you can do that. and all those ways will feed all your senses. What you see should be calming and pleasant. One way to do that it by choosing colors that promote serenity. Usual soft pastel colors help us become calmer. we can choose softer wall colors or choose furniture painting and other decor in colors that soothe us. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have bold bright colors at home, because you can and you should if those are colors you like. But have at least one room that you can go that will help you relax.

Now, we understand that we don’t all live in mansions and get to have a room for the sole purpose of relaxation. But we can all create a nook for our calming activities. It could be a reading nook where you can lose yourself in the story of your book, or a music nook to listen your music in or your crocheting nook if that’s what you are into. It doesn’t have to be a large space, the only requirement for this area is that it make you feel relaxed. it should be clutter free with only items that are conducive to your peace of mind. A disorganized, cluttered and unclean home will surely bring unwanted stress.

HW0_417678Sense of smell is very important too. Some essential oils, scented candles and air fresheners help in decluttering our mind. Make sure you have your favorite scent available. Usually the softer natural scents live lavender and chamomile are the ones that happy messages to our brain.

Natural items also help to center us and bring us a sense of calm. Fresh flowers, living plants, shells, pine cones and other items made with natural material truly help to ground us and fire up those happy feeling and memories in us. Place them strategically throughout your house or living space for optimal benefit. Places like near the entrance for you to see as soon as you walk in, in your living or family room, kitchen or dining room where you spend most of your time, your bedroom and definitely your favorite nook are the perfect places to place them.

Red Hot Summer Romance and Roses

2016-08-16-BLOG

Once upon a time, a long long time ago, we were called Exclusively Roses. Infact some of our long time customer still know us as Exclusively Roses. And all we sold were roses. As a business that sold roses, exclusively, we are seasoned pros at handling them. We design them in so many different ways to show their beauty. We know what they symbolize and what about them makes them attractive to our customers and their recipients. One of their many meanings is LOVE. Especially red roses. They are the universal flower for communicating the deep romantic sentiment. The Hot Red color makes them the special flower for any romantic occasion.

HW0_65675 (1)Flowers in general are a great way to communicate romantic sentiments or really any occasion. You know what else communicates your feelings? Words. Yes, shocking isn’t it?! Yes, the right, honest words are what you need to makes sure your loved one knows how your feel. The don’t need to be flowery, poetic words laced with words you looked up on a thesaurus. they can be simple, short and sweet. To the point even. We get it, sometimes, it is difficult to put deep feelings into words. Some words may feel to weak or inadequate or mediocre to really show how you feel. Or sometimes the feeling is so deep you get tongue tied. It’s ok when that happens. This were ACTION comes into play. When words fail you, show your love with action. Remember it doesn’t have to be a grand display. you don’t have to pour your life savings and cash out your 401K to do it. It doesn’t have to show it in the important ways. Sometimes, the simplest actions are the most effective ones. You could get you honey a pint of her favorite ice cream on your way home when you know she’s had a long day. You could pick his favorite movie on netflix order some meaty pizza and get some beer and make the evening about him when he’s had a rough day. Leave her a sweet post it message on the bathroom mirror. You’ve noticed that his favorite running shoes have seen better days, find the same ones and get him new ones. These aren’t grand gestures, but they are the ones that speak to the heart, that show you care.

Send flowers. We know that this is something a florist would encourage, but seriously, do it. And since we are just wonderful people we are going to make it easy for you without breaking the bank. We’ve already said that Red roses are the best way to communicate deep romantic feelings. Well, friends, we have a deal for you. Click here and find out! This deal expires soon so don’t miss out. It’s summer time, it’s hot out, it’s time to turn the heat up on your romance now.

Staging Tips to Sell Your House Faster

2016-08-10-MAIN-BLOG-B

They say “preparation is the key to success”. Well, they are right, whoever “they” are. In our business, being proactive and preparing for any and all possible events is key to our success in serving our customers. Another industry that requires an equal measure of preparedness is the real estate industry. We are both in the business of selling dreams and satisfying emotional expectations. There are similarities in the way flowers make us feel and how a good home make us feel.

HW0_345632Flowers have a role in the real estate business. In fact they has a role in all businesses but is has a very positive role in helping realtors sell a house. As experienced florist of 27 years, we know the power of a clean and well designed piece of art with flowers. We understand the power of color, texture and light coordination and balance. We understand what it take to catch a potential customer’s attention and delight their recipient. A realtor also understand that a well put together home or space has a potential of being sold faster than one that is disorganized and chaotic. Which is why it is important to stage a home that is up for sale.

A good designer knows that choosing the right vase, basket, lomey dish, ceramic pot and any container for the flowers is the first step in making a masterpiece. It has to be attractive enough to inspire the design of the flowers that will be arranged in it. To a realtor, the first step is to make sure that there is curb appeal to the home s/he is selling. Just like a scraped, broken, chipped or simply unattractive container would destroy the effect the flowers should give, a home with unkempt driveway or yard, or chipping paint or dented doors will render the house unattractive enough to not want to see what’s inside. Well maybe you’d want to see out of morbid curiosity. We all want to see the inside of a home that could pass for the Addam’s Family’s home but would we want to buy it? I think not.PHW_372732

A flowers designer will also have to go through all the flowers available and pick and choose the freshest and the prettiest flowers, discarding the ones that are old or damaged. Same applies to a home seller. There is no point in holding on to the broken, unnecessary, useless and old (not antique). Let it go. This will be helpful in the near future, too. When it’s time to move there won’t be any unnecessary items to pack. It’s just extra work to pack to then unpack and then deem useless and have to discard. Unless it is that chipped frame your daughter made you with that macaroni glued all around it, it’s not worth keeping. This will eliminate clutter.

Once the right flowers are chosen, the designer will go through the process of cleaning it, removing the extra foliage, dirt and imperfection to be able to create a clean arrangement showcasing the beauty of each bloom. Same concept applies when selling a home. Now that you’ve purged yourself of all the unneeded items, it’s time to clean your home. Either hire a cleaning company to scrub every square inch of the home and a painter to splash some fresh paint on the walls or make an event out of it by doing it yourself. It need to be done. Just like our customers don’t want to buy unpolished flowers, home buyers won’t be able to see themselves living in the house if their first impression is how dirty it is. So get to scrubadubdub-ing.HW0_34687

An experienced artist of flowers knows the power and effects of light on flowers. S/he would know how some flowers respond to light, like how sunflowers and gerbera daisies will turn their beautiful faces towards the sun or how the colors of some flowers would look under various lights. Lighting is equally powerful to the look of a home. Keeping the windows clean and the blinds open to let natural light while arranging the furniture to compliment it will give a home a glow and present it in a positive “light”.

Knowing colors is one of the most important tools a flower designer could have. Understanding which colors complement and compliment each other will help a designer in creating the most appealing arrangement. Sometimes flower arrangements look better when they are muted or have very few colors in them and at times they look best when they have a burst of every color in the rainbow. This is also true for the look of a home. Some homes will look attractive with just a few colors with a whole lot of whites and at times they can benefit from an array of colors. It’s all about the lighting in the house and it’s personality.HW0_417668

Flowers evoke many emotions for the designer, the customer and ultimately the recipient. They are a visual delight, they feel wonderful to the touch and smell divine. Their colors, the way they are arranged and the message that comes along with them communicate many sentiments. Similarly, the look and feel of a house has the power of conjuring many emotions in a person. staging a home that is for sale to speak to and appeal to a buyer’s senses is important. Playing soft music, setting the temperature in the house to a comfortable setting, burning some light scented candles or introducing the scent of home goods will help the buyer feel like this house can be his/her new home or bring back good memories of their childhood.

And most importantly make sure to include floral elements to your home staging. Either a vase arrangement at the foyer or in the living room or kitchen or restroom.  A tall lush green plant in the corner of the dining or family room, or a blooming orchid plant in the bedrooms will help the home give it a welcoming feel. As we mentioned, flowers evoke many positive emotions. And when you want to sell a home you want to make sure that positivity comes with it. Especially when you are taking pictures for your website or social media site. You can up your game by making sure that there are some flower arrangements in the background. “Look at this state of the art, chef’s kitchen” and low-key show an elegant orchid plant perched by the sink. Yes, flowers can help you sell a house!

Summertime Romance

Romance in the summer is the funnest of all. Dates can be filled with many activities. Those awkward silent moment you would normally have sitting at a table at a fancy restaurant while quietly chewing on your stake and thinking on what to say next to fill the baby elephant size void in the air. In the summer you have the luxury of arranging fun activities to do. Which is a great way to get to know each other, learn each other’s personalities, temperaments, “fun levels”, and simply have a good time without the heaviness of sitting and talking.

HW0_500847And we are here to facilitate your summer romancing. First you see a pretty lady that works at the office 2 floors down from you (you know this because you saw her riding the elevator and she gets off 2 floors below your floors, obviously) and think to yourself “I would like to get to know her” then you use your charm to get her name from the office’s front desk. next you call you call your trusted florist and arrange a same day delivery of beautiful flowers saying “hey saw you in the elevator this morning and wanted to know if you’d like to grab some lunch at the taco food truck tomorrow at noon” make sure to include your phone number and full name in the note so she can say “Um, yeah sure  but can we make it @ 12:30?” (most likely answer since people can’t say no to flowers) or “no, you are sweet and all but I’m married, but thanks for the flowers” (in which case you should be happy knowing that you made her day and next time to check for rings). And most importantly so she can google you and do some “social media stalking” to make sure you are not a nut case; a girl’s gotta protect herself. Flowers are a great ice breaker. They will promote happy feelings in whoever receives them, so, in our humble opinion, are a great way to seal the date.

HW0_65675 (1)The next day make sure you look you best and meet her at the location you both agree on, buy her the tacos and drink and sit at a nearby bench and get to know each other a little. Ask silly questions, talk about your favorite food trucks, enjoy the lovely day, do some people watching, then walk her to her floor and wish her a great afternoon. When you get to your office text her with a short not that you had a great time and hope to see her again. If she feels the same was she will let you know. If she doesn’t then she will let you know too. Because you sent her flowers to ask her out from the very start, she knows you are a nice guy, this is a good thing and highly likely that she will agree to meet you on a second date – unless of course you chewed you taco with your mouth open or smelled like sewer backing in the sun, in which case we suggest you don’t do that anymore, not even the best arrangements from the best florist can help you there.

HW0_352191Now that you have your second date and agreed to meet up on saturday afternoon you can plan a fun activity for you both to do. You can go to Treetop Adventure Course in rockville MD and show off your tarzan-esque skills ziplining through canopies of trees and man-made obstacle course. Or do a bit of scavenger hunting on The National Mall. This could actually be a great double date idea. Since this is your first official date part deux, you both probably would feel more comfortable if you had your buddies and their significant other tag along and make it a group outing. You can split in pairs and hunt for whatever is in your scavenger hunt list is like finding a Monet, the statue of a typewriter eraser, a moon rock, etc and taking a selfie with your finding. Person to fin all the items in your list first wins. Perhaps you can go to Art Jams for their Paint and sip date night where you can show off your creative side, sip on some vino and just have fun. You can tease each other about your brush strokes and stick figure level painting skills, peek at the other dater’s work of art, have fun light conversations getting to know each other more. Have a blast!

When the date is over and you all go back to your respective homes with a smile on your faces and think about how this all started with a beautiful arrangement of gorgeous flowers. Remember that flowers are not just at the beginning of relationship but the middle too. they are a great way of saying “Thank you for a great date” or “How would you like a repeat of our first date next week” or “I want to tell you that I love you but don’t want to scare you off too soon so here are some red roses to open the door to what’s coming”, “You are the love of my life”, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” “We are married!”,”Happy anniversary”, “You are as beautiful today as the day I first saw you” and much much more! Flowers are the language of romance so don’t do romance without them.

Summer Hot Spots In DC

2016-07-13-BLOG

HW0_372948We are deep into summer now and it is gooooorgeous out! Sure is is humid some days, sure we get a little rain here and there but we have to admit that our city is beautiful and vibrant in the summer. And since we don’t get these beautiful days 365 days a year, we need to make the most of these few days of perfection. AND take advantage of the warm days and go to all the outdoor cafes and rooftop bars, lounges, restaurants, and cafes we could possibly squeeze into these few months. Because , we at MyFlorist are good people (toot toot) and we love our customers, we’ve searched high and low for the best places to go and soak up some Vitamin D. Remember, all these places are great for socialising, family time, throw small celebratory dinners and parties, romantic dates or even networking for work. Remember, just because you are technically “working”, doesn’t mean that you need to miss out on the lovely summer.  There is a way to incorporate sun time and work time. And we’ve got the places for you!

HW0_197669

Our favorite top roof-top lounge/bar /restaurants are the DNV Rooftop lounge at the Donovan where there is a pool bar (yassss!!! so much yasss!). It’s located right on Thomas Circle and is open on Saturdays and Sundays for brunch from noon to 4pm, or go after work for happy hour from 4-7pm or enjoy the bar between 4pm to 1pm on fridays and Saturdays. Looking for something a little shmancy-er? How about the POV at the W Hotel on 15th St NW between F and E Streets where you can feel like a VIP with bottle service or host a small party. Restaurant Marvin (named after Marvin Gaye) on U Street Corridor right on 14th and U Street NW is another option for a great bar/restaurant for social time while still enjoying the summer warmth. And for good food and great view of Adams Morgan head on to the Roofers.

HW0_242773Sometimes you just want to sit down with your friends and family and enjoy your meal and great conversation while just wearing your shorts and flipflops. If you find yourself on 17th St NW between Riggs and P st NW (yes that’s 4 blocks), then you will have a choices of restaurants offering a variety of cuisine AND spacious outdoor sitting. Perhaps you want to play Bocce while you sip your Vino. Well then, Vinoteca is the right place for you (get the Who Dat Doggy, you must). Then there is the Tabard Inn in Dupont Circle. This place is a little oasis, so charming and so continental looking that you may feel like you transported somewhere out of DC. It’s a perfect place for a date, we promise. Of course there is the Georgetown area, with it’s river side restaurants like Sequoia or Nick’s Riverside Grill. But go to Farmers Fisher Bakers and get the fruity drinks like the Mai Tais and Scorpion Bowls and Daiquiris and… you get the point. It’s like going to a tropical vacation but not really. And it’s right on the river so you get to add that water element to the whole experiences. Win win win we thinketh.

So here you are. Go forth and enjoy yourself. Or not, it’s ok to POMO too. Speaking of POMOing (see blog directly below this) we are generous people so we are extending the competition for another week.

The Pleasure of Missing Out

BLOG (3)

Going out, having fun, socializing, networking and being part of what’s happening is good, exciting fun and healthy. But sometimes is great to go off the grid and just RSVP NO. You will find that there is pleasure in just not attending every social event that comes your way. You don’t have to, furthermore, often times you really shouldn’t. If you happened to catch the Huffington Post article More Americans Embracing POMO (The ‘Pleasure Of Missing Out’) Read the full story, it is in fact, ok to not attend every invitation. There are many reasons to enjoy the POMO.

HW0_486256We, being who we are, and by that we mean just fabulous humans that get to play with flowers, are here to offer you ways to bow out of attending yet another summer hoedown this season with a lot of class.

Firstly, as Al Roker said in his morning segment, don’t be the “maybe I’ll make it” or “I’ll try to make it” person when you know all you’ll be doing that day is wearing your yoga pants drinking you yummy glass of wine binging on episodes of Game of Thrones. If you know you are not going then say so, there is no need or reason for you to create false expectations. But say it in a way that the person who invited you doesn’t feel insulted. Send flowers. Shocker! We know. It doesn’t have to be a ginormous arrangement fit for a king’s palace. A tasteful, artful and well created arrangement of fresh flowers with a note saying “Thank you for inviting me to you shindig, sadly I won’t be able to make it but hope these flowers brighten you day in my absence (because we all know I am the life of the party)” Obviously you can leave the last part out, sadly not everyone has the delightful sense of humor you do.

Sometimes, the invitations require you to travel, buy a new outfit gift for your host and book your lodging. All that is saying is more travel expense for you. And here you are meticulously planning and budgeting your summer vacation to Santorini or Disney World or anywhere. Now you have an invite that will require you to fly across the country which will inevitably put a dent in your vacation loot. Well guess what, you don’t have to go. Here is your chance to RSVP “gosh, I’m sorry but no but here are some beautiful flowers to thank you for valuing me enough to want me to be part of your party”.HW0_474534

These days, with everyone posting “look how great my life is and look at my vast social life” posts on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, and incessantly Tweeting about it may lead you to believe that everyone is having a much better and fun life than you to. Not true. If you’ve read the article, on average, people attend 4 social events a month. That’s once a week. so if you go to happy hour with your coworkers one day, to lunch with your friend one day, brunch on one sunday and watched a game at a bar another day you are living the average life. And like you, the majority of people use any excuse to get out an event to netflix and pizza at home. Full disclaimer, I’ve used an imaginary BarBEQue to get out of a real one, simply because it was a great day for a nap and just didn’t feel like “people-ing” that day.

As mentioned before, we are pretty great people and we love our customers. In fact, we love them so much that we want to encourage them to experience the POMO. Soooo… we are offering a competition on Facebook. You tell us about you best POMO story on our FACEBOOK page and whoever gets the most likes to pick up from our store a $100 arrangement, and if you live or work in our delivery area we will deliver them to you. It’s simple, post, get the most likes, win. This competition will run until midnight July12th. Parameters for the competition will be posted on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Make sure to like and follow us for future competition posts. Who doesn’t love free flowers, right?!

Food, Drinks, Entertainment and Decor For A 4th of July Celebration

2016-06-29-BLOG

When planning a party or any kind of celebration, there are four elements that are a must: Food, Drinks Entertainment and Decor. And for the 4th of July celebration, when we get to celebrate the birthday of our country, it is important we do it with lots of pizzazz. It’s the country’s big day after all, so it’s a given that the theme is red, white and blue. Here are some of our fun ideas that can help you plan your celebration.

HW0_223817Food

BBQ is the go to. It’s hot out, you want to soak up some vitamin D, you have the day off so it’s a perfect excuse to grill al fresco. Plus it a very easy and stress free way to feed your guests that will show up with their friends and their friend’s friends and their cousins, so a lot of people. But you might want your food to follow in the patriotic theme so there are fun of ideas to help you. You can incorporate fruits and vegetables and deserts for the reds whites and blue elements. You can make some fruit salad with strawberries blueberries watermelons and bananas and throw in some mint leaves because yum. if you are baking a cake the you can decorate it and use blueberries and bananas for the stars in the American Flags and white icing and strawberries arranged in lines for the stripes. You can also make red velvet cupcakes with white buttercream icing and plop a blueberry (or three) on top. For a healthier options you can make individual frappes in clear cups and layer with ripe strawberries or raspberries yogurt and of course blueberries. We’ve decided that blueberries should be the fruit of the day!

DrinksHW0_474725

It’s hot outside so you will need to hydrate. Now, what you choose to hydrate with will depend on your age and choice of beverage. Fourth of July is usually a family holiday, so there most probably will be small children, teenagers and adults of a legal drinking age present, it’s, therefore, important that they can all enjoy themselves, responsibly. Here are some cool ideas you can use to incorporate the theme of the day into your drinks. Since it’s july and undoubtedly hot out it’s important you have ice. Ice doesn’t have to be boring cubes of just H2O. You can get creative. Cut cubes of watermelon and freeze them. YES! They  are juicy watery fruit so they are perfect for freezing and they will add flavor to your drink whether it is just water or otherwise AND they will not water down your drink (if you are not drinking water of course). you can make smoothies for the younger crowd. We suggest you blend the different color fruits separately and layer them so they can show the distinct color in the glass you pour them in. If you are serving the fruity deliciousness to an adult then you can pour in some adult liquor stick in an umbrella and tiny American flag, dip your feet in the kiddie pool sit back and enjoy. If you are mixing some cocktails then here are some drinks that will add color to your drinks: the blue Gatorade which is hydrating, refreshing, delicious, and blue, Hawaiian Punch for your red, and Pina Colada mix for your whites.

HW0_430699

Entertainment

Well it’s a party after all, your guest have to enjoy themselves and a great way to do it is to plan games. you can buy red white and blue balloons to stay in them and play water balloons or balloon pop. Or play American history trivia, pictionary or charades (you’ve got to keep the kids brain working in the summer wink wink). Capture the flag with American flags is another good one. Baseball is after all THE American pastime, so you can’t go wrong there. Bocce is another game that is getting some serious popularity these days and a perfect outdoors game for all ages. All these are games that both the younger and older crowds can play and really enjoy.

Decor

We’ve touched on some things already, like little flags for your drink and the patriotic color balloons. But there are so many different ways you can liven up your place to really add some fun to your party. Of course flowers are number one. You can contact a knowledgeable florist and they will guide you through what would look great. And by “they” we mean “we”. There aren’t very many blue flowers and a  plethora of red and white ones. But there are many ways to incorporate the color while adding spark to an arrangement that would make them perfect for a party. Blue vases, blue ribbons or bows, stared confetti centerpieces and many more and be arranged together to give your party the oomph it deserves. You may think, “why would I get flowers to put outside to bake in the sun”, and you would be right to think it but remember your guests are not only outdoors. They will be congregating in your living room and your kitchen and will use your bathroom. Flowers will help you spread the festive decor you have outdoors merge seamlessly indoors and do it with class. And you get to enjoy the flowers long after the party is over, the last of the guest has been shoved out and  there aren’t’ any more hot dogs left. So Bonus!

We hope you have a fantastic holiday weekend celebrating the country’s birthday! Have fun and stay safe!

Our Favorite Summer Vacation Spots In The DMV

2016-06-22-BLOG

Our Nation’s Capital has been a major vacation destination for many, many maaaany years thanks to the many museums, monuments and historical locations the city is #blessed with. However, we, the residents of the DMV, don’t really take advantage of the many fun things that our city offers. When was the last time you played tourist in the city? Have you seen all the monuments, museums, historical homes, and parks the area we live in offers? Maybe not. We take the fact that we live in the area for granted and  we put off the plans to visit for another day. Well, guys, “another day” is here. Let’s make this summer the summer we get to know our area better and enjoy what it has to offer. Play tourist, walk around and talk with an accent if you like and make it fun!

HW0_197665Here are some of our favorite destinations:

  • As we’ve mentioned, we as residents don’t take the time to visit the many wonderful things that the city has to offer but many of those beautiful things are also usually overlooked. Yes we all know about The Monument and Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial but did you know there is and FDR memorial on  a 7.5 acre land? Or that when you sitting in traffic in Logan Circle either driving or taking the 54 bus, that there is a guy on a horse in the middle of that roundabout? That’s General George Henry Thomas if you’re interested. If you find yourself on 22nd St NW and Constitution Ave NW you can find good Ol’ Al (as we like to call Albert Einstein ’cause we are cool like that) sitting with a book looking pensive. If you take a stroll down Water street SW admiring the boats and yachts docked at the various marinas and yacht clubs you will find yourself at the Titanic memorial. Yes, that ginormous ship that buttheaded with an iceberg. Aaand you will find a statue dedicated to the men who sacrificed their lives to save the women and children in the ship. The fun part of this statue is that it is standing like that scene from the movie when Rose and Jack spread their arms and felt like flying. Exactly like that. We know about the Vietnam  Veterans Memorial, but do we know about the Vietnam’s Women Memorial. How about the George Mason Memorial where Mr Mason is sitting on a bench admiring the little fountain in front of him right on East Basin  Dr SW and Ohio Dr SW behind the Jefferson Memorial. And did you know there is an Air and Space museum in Virginia? These are just a few of many that many don’t visit but now you can.HW0_533036
  • You are at home so you are saving money that you’d have otherwise spent on travel and lodging. This means you get to splurge on other touristy things that you wouldn’t normally do. Like the Big Bus Washington DC Hop-on Hop-Off tour or The Washington DC By Moon Light Night Tours or go up the Washington Monument or take a day trip to Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. Just do completely touristy things like you are new to the area knowing that when your adventure is over you get to go home and sleep in your own bed  and not worry about how clean the TV remote is (because you know exactly how “clean” it is).
  • Take advantage of the summer festivals around the city. Summer and BBQ go hand in hand and this weekend June 25th and 26th you get to enjoy the Annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle. Droooool…. And every Friday this summer you can head on to the Fairgrounds and take advantage of all the food truck foods Truckeroo brings. Double drooool….. If you love music (who doesn’t right?), check out the Maryland Music Festival at the Merriweather or see what’s happening at the Wolf Trap in Vienna VA this summer.
  • We are a florist, so anything to do with flowers is like heaven to us. So it’s not a surprise that this is one of our favorite destinations, the Botanical Gardens. They offer guided tours and exhibits. But nut just that, friends. They also have concerts. We suggest you go to their website and see what they have going on. Such fun!
  • For some family fun, head on to the Tyson’s Corner area for some happy times and create great memories with your family and friends. This July you can head onto Jones Branch Drive for the Slide the City Slip and slide water party event. Or take the Silver Line to the Tyson’s Corner Metro Station where Cirque du Soleil will be end of July and most of August. And while you are in the area come visit us!

HW0_474502

So here you have it. You don’t have to venture too far to vacation and you really should take advantage of the city you’re in. We live in lively, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area, we should absorb it all and enjoy it. Plus, it’s good to know a little bit more about our city than tourists do, don’t you think? And all these place are right within our delivery area!!! (see bellow for map)

Famous Movie Dads

2016-06-15-BLOG

There are a lot of movie dads that either remind us of our fathers, make us wish were our fathers or make us thank the stars, the moon, the sun and all that is holy that our fathers are not like them. They’ve made us laugh, cry, cringe, gasp and more. And we thought it would be fun to list some of the famous movie dads that, whether they were good, bad, ugly or funny, did the best they could for their children.

Here are our picks in no particular order of preference:

  • It’s a wonderful life (La Vita è Bella) directed and starred by Roberto Benigni (who, by the way, won the academy award for best actor for this role) is a funny and ohh so sad movie set in the WWII time. It’s a story of a father and son who were taken to a concentration camp where Benigni’s character is set on sheltering his son from the sadness, horrors and tragedy of their misfortune by convincing him that their time in the camp is not real but a game. If you haven’t watched the movie, we won’t spoil it for you but we suggest you have a box of tissue at an easy reach.
  • Of course you cannot talk about famous movie dads without talking about Bryan Mills played by Liam Neeson in Taken. This is a multi part movie about a man  trying to rescue his daughter and her friend, who had been abducted by sex/human traffickers in Paris, by utilizing his massive skills learned from his former life as a government operative. Famous quote I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you’re looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money… but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it – I will not look for you, I will not pursue you… but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you… and I will kill you.” That is a whole lot of promise, and judging from this movie, words that need to be heeded.
  • The Pursuit of Happiness is another goodie played by real life father and son, Will and Jaden Smith. This heartwarming movies of perseverance, hard work and a stubborn refusal to give into despair as a father struggles to make a better life for his son and himself after the pair get evicted from their home with no place to go. Even living in a shelter, or finally landing a job as an intern (so without pay) in a brokerage firm didn’t dim his light or discourage him in his pursuit of his and his son’s happiness. Which, in the end he achieves.

  • There are, of course, great fathers of the cartoon variety too. Let’s not forget how Marvin from Finding Nemo swam across the Pacific Ocean accompanied by a spacey blue fish, that couldn’t retain water let alone information, to find and rescue his son that was “taken” by a human diver P. Sherman whose address is 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney – the only thing that Dory could remember and apparently so do we. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Has a lot of funny bits and a lot of fatherly determination to get his son and also a son’s bravery.
  • While we are in the fun world of the animated, the other awesome father that is always there, whether dead or alive, to install words of wisdom into his son, is the King Of the Jungle, Mufasa from The Lion King. This mighty king’s mission was to make sure that his son grows up to become the best kind of king to the animal kingdom he could possibly be. And he did so even after his death. That, friends, is dedication to this parenting thing.
  • This one may be controversial, but no matter Don Vito Corleone’s mobish ways in The Godfather, he was still a good and dedicated father to his children. And all he did in his “unethical” business dealing and offers he made that people couldn’t refuse, he did for his children, his family. He wasn’t just a father to his children but a fathers to his community.
  • Traditionally, a father is the provider, and to provide for his family, he needs needs a job. And this was especially true in old Italy. In post world war Italy jobs were scars and a man had to go through great lengths to get to his job. Literally. So when Antonio Ricci in Bicycle Thieves gets his only mode of transportation, his bicycle, stolen he starts his bicycle retrieval adventure accompanied by his small boy Bruno. This is a beautiful story of a determined man  who to is the ultimate role model to his son and a son that learns about his father’s daily struggles to provide for his family. If your heart doesn’t ache and you don’t have tears in your eyes throughout this movies, I’d check for pulse.
  • Ofcourse not all movies about dads turn us into emotional puddles of goo. There those that use humour to show is the lighter and funnier side of fatherhood, much like Steve Martin’s version of Father Of The Bride and Father Of The Bride II (spencer Tracy’s original version was funny too). The movies show a father’s neurosis in the funniest ways, when he is faced with the reality of his little baby girl is now a woman and is getting married. These are movies you can watch over and over again and never tire of.

There are ofcourse many many many other great movie dads that follow similar themes of perseverance and determination, fatherly duty, unconditional love, and bravery. Watch John Q, It’s A Wonderful Life,  Road to Perdition and Boyz N The Hood and we dare you to not be in awe of these fathers and not be moved. Seriously, go ahead and watch…we’ll wait right here…

Now tell us, doesn’t your father deserve to be celebrated for being the kind of of father he is. He did his best to make sure you are safe, protected, and grew up to become the man or woman you are. Showed you how a father should be and much much more. This Father’s Day show him he is the best father you could have ever hoped and wished for. And friends, Fathers like flowers too… Don’t let that alpha male, testosterone, grrrrr fool you. There is a sweet, kind, soft side to him that appreciates delicate things like a pretty arrangement of flowers.

How Flowers Have Inspired Artists

2016-06-02-BLOG

Walking through museums and art galleries or even people’s homes we see paintings or other art works by famous or lesser known artists. And it is not unusual to see nature depicted in the art as nature is known to have inspired artist throughout history. How could it not, right? And one of those elements of nature that have served as muses to artists are flowers. Not surprising right? We certainly are not surprised since we are inspired by some of the most beautiful and colorful flowers every day. All flowers are special in their own way if you take the time to really look at them. So many shapes, textures, colors and temperament; just beautiful.

In our quest to find who else was inspired by flowers enough to immortalize them on canvas, we found some amazing artists and artworks that in return inspired us. We were in absolute awe when we found Jeff Hanson’s work (painting above). This visually impaired artist brings the flowers to life with his amazing brush strokes giving his paintings wonderful texture and vibrant colors. The way he translates nature’s inspiration into artwork is truly breath-taking.

HW0_553675Sunflowers are , without a doubt one of the beautiful flowers we’ve worked with and we discovered that they are also one of the most painted flowers by some of the most famous artist throughout history. The most known painting of the flower is Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. A simple arrangement of a punch of sunflowers in vase sitting on a table. There is even a painting by Paul Gauguin entitled The Painter of Sunflowers that depicts Van Gogh painting sunflowers, and another one of a woman standing in front of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers by  Isaac Israel. Yes, that’s how famous it is. However, there are many other artists that couldn’t deny the beauty and majesty of the flower that they had to put their spin on them on canvas. Like Diego Rivera with his Girl With Sunflowers, Alfred Gockel, Gustav Klimt, Claude Monet and many many more.

HW0_223844Both Van Gogh and Claude Monet didn’t stop at just sunflowers. daisies, irises, poppies and an array of wildflowers had the honor of taking residence in their paintings. Of course, they are not the only ones that thought flowers would make great subjects for their masterpiece creations. Georgia O’Keeffe painted all kinds of flowers from the ordinary flowers like daisies to more exotic ones like Heliconia. Even Pablo Picasso, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Andy Warhol painted flowers in their brilliantly wacky ways.

Whether they are post impressionist like Cezanne, Impressionists like Renoir or Manet (not to be confused with Monet) , Abstract artist like Paul Klee or Renaissance artist like Leonardo (no, not one of the four Mutant Ninja Turtles) D’avinci all used flowers as subjects for their beautiful work.

HW0_193240So there you have it. there are so many beautiful paintings of flowers out there to convince us that we are not the only ones that see the magic in them. but then we thing flowers in any form we see them are beautiful. While we enjoy creating wonderful masterpieces with the flowers themselves to communicate and evoke many emotions and sentiments, many artist take the beauty that flowers offer and translate them with paints, and delicate brush strokes and evoke similar sentiments and communicate similar messages and immortalize them on canvas forever. We understand that unless we take a trip to museums and have millions stashed away to own some of these paintings we don’t get to enjoy the beauty they offer. So we offer a more affordable and obtainable alternative or art in fresh flowers. We highly recommend you get yourself a piece of creativity in your home and workplace.
