Our Favorite Holiday Memories

hw0_495766Traditions, laughter, family, friends are what make lasting memories that you carry through your life and get to relive and revive year after year every holiday. And if you are lucky you get to recreate and pass on to your children. We all have our favorite holiday memories and those memories are what tie us together in the merriment of the season. The smell of cinnamon-ey, ginger-ey, sugary baked goods, the taste of spiced wine or creamy eggnog, singing Christmas carols as you studied your Christmas tree and devised the best way to hand your ornaments or that time you sat on your father’s shoulders and reached up to put the big bright and shiny star on top of the tree. And that time your uncles strategized on how to best hang the Christmas lights on the outside wall of your home, or eyeing the Christmas presents siting at the foot of the tree and guessing what could possibly be in the boxes.

hw0_629767It could be going to midnight mass at church, or playing Mary and Joseph at you Sunday schools play of the nativity. Or going to a nursing home or children’s home with you parents to bring some Christmas gift and spreading some holiday cheer. or it could be watching the joy and surprise in your loved ones’ faces when they open the gifts that you put so much thought in or spent the money you worked so hard for.

Or it is  the stories you told, games you played, laughter and tears you shares with your family on Christmas eve. or that  time you went ice skating at your neighborhood skating rink, or the time you caught the Nutcracker at the theater. I could be the holiday trip your family took to a cabin for a special holiday trip, or the tropical Christmas that one year where you said Mele Kalikimaka instead of Merry Christmas.

hw0_495728We all have our own special memories that we will keep and treasure for all the days of our lives. And there are the memories we are going to make. Every holiday season is an opportunity to create a joyful memory for our loved ones. Every day of the season is an opportunity to make the days special for our families, friends and ourselves. But we should not limit this opportunity to only the holiday season. Every day of every year is an opportunity for lovely long lasting memories and and opportunity to make someone smile and have a heart full of joy and cheer. We urge you to make memories. We make memories every day, people never forget the day they received flowers, no matter ho many times they receive them in their lives.

Famous Movie Dads

2016-06-15-BLOG

There are a lot of movie dads that either remind us of our fathers, make us wish were our fathers or make us thank the stars, the moon, the sun and all that is holy that our fathers are not like them. They’ve made us laugh, cry, cringe, gasp and more. And we thought it would be fun to list some of the famous movie dads that, whether they were good, bad, ugly or funny, did the best they could for their children.

HW0_290383
Play Ball Bouquet

Here are our picks in no particular order of preference:

  • It’s a wonderful life (La Vita è Bella) directed and starred by Roberto Benigni (who, by the way, won the academy award for best actor for this role) is a funny and ohh so sad movie set in the WWII time. It’s a story of a father and son who were taken to a concentration camp where Benigni’s character is set on sheltering his son from the sadness, horrors and tragedy of their misfortune by convincing him that their time in the camp is not real but a game. If you haven’t watched the movie, we won’t spoil it for you but we suggest you have a box of tissue at an easy reach.
  • Of course you cannot talk about famous movie dads without talking about Bryan Mills played by Liam Neeson in Taken. This is a multi part movie about a man  trying to rescue his daughter and her friend, who had been abducted by sex/human traffickers in Paris, by utilizing his massive skills learned from his former life as a government operative. Famous quote I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you’re looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money… but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it – I will not look for you, I will not pursue you… but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you… and I will kill you.” That is a whole lot of promise, and judging from this movie, words that need to be heeded.
  • The Pursuit of Happiness is another goodie played by real life father and son, Will and Jaden Smith. This heartwarming movies of perseverance, hard work and a stubborn refusal to give into despair as a father struggles to make a better life for his son and himself after the pair get evicted from their home with no place to go. Even living in a shelter, or finally landing a job as an intern (so without pay) in a brokerage firm didn’t dim his light or discourage him in his pursuit of his and his son’s happiness. Which, in the end he achieves.

    1948 Ford Pickup
  • There are, of course, great fathers of the cartoon variety too. Let’s not forget how Marvin from Finding Nemo swam across the Pacific Ocean accompanied by a spacey blue fish, that couldn’t retain water let alone information, to find and rescue his son that was “taken” by a human diver P. Sherman whose address is 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney – the only thing that Dory could remember and apparently so do we. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Has a lot of funny bits and a lot of fatherly determination to get his son and also a son’s bravery.
  • While we are in the fun world of the animated, the other awesome father that is always there, whether dead or alive, to install words of wisdom into his son, is the King Of the Jungle, Mufasa from The Lion King. This mighty king’s mission was to make sure that his son grows up to become the best kind of king to the animal kingdom he could possibly be. And he did so even after his death. That, friends, is dedication to this parenting thing.
  • This one may be controversial, but no matter Don Vito Corleone’s mobish ways in The Godfather, he was still a good and dedicated father to his children. And all he did in his “unethical” business dealing and offers he made that people couldn’t refuse, he did for his children, his family. He wasn’t just a father to his children but a fathers to his community.
  • Traditionally, a father is the provider, and to provide for his family, he needs needs a job. And this was especially true in old Italy. In post world war Italy jobs were scars and a man had to go through great lengths to get to his job. Literally. So when Antonio Ricci in Bicycle Thieves gets his only mode of transportation, his bicycle, stolen he starts his bicycle retrieval adventure accompanied by his small boy Bruno. This is a beautiful story of a determined man  who to is the ultimate role model to his son and a son that learns about his father’s daily struggles to provide for his family. If your heart doesn’t ache and you don’t have tears in your eyes throughout this movies, I’d check for pulse.
  • Ofcourse not all movies about dads turn us into emotional puddles of goo. There those that use humour to show is the lighter and funnier side of fatherhood, much like Steve Martin’s version of Father Of The Bride and Father Of The Bride II (spencer Tracy’s original version was funny too). The movies show a father’s neurosis in the funniest ways, when he is faced with the reality of his little baby girl is now a woman and is getting married. These are movies you can watch over and over again and never tire of.

Dad’s Day Ball Park Snack Basket

There are ofcourse many many many other great movie dads that follow similar themes of perseverance and determination, fatherly duty, unconditional love, and bravery. Watch John Q, It’s A Wonderful Life,  Road to Perdition and Boyz N The Hood and we dare you to not be in awe of these fathers and not be moved. Seriously, go ahead and watch…we’ll wait right here…

Now tell us, doesn’t your father deserve to be celebrated for being the kind of of father he is. He did his best to make sure you are safe, protected, and grew up to become the man or woman you are. Showed you how a father should be and much much more. This Father’s Day show him he is the best father you could have ever hoped and wished for. And friends, Fathers like flowers too… Don’t let that alpha male, testosterone, grrrrr fool you. There is a sweet, kind, soft side to him that appreciates delicate things like a pretty arrangement of flowers.

5 Best Gift Ideas For Your Administrative Professional

BLOG (1)

There you are sitting at your desk thinking, contemplating your next world take over when your calendar reminder pops up to tell you that you have a meeting tomorrow at 10am that you set up months ago while playing golf and rubbing elbows with who’s who of the industry and had forgotten all about. And your eyes go wide open and bug out and you think “Yawza! Forgot about that!” Well guess who didn’t forget. That’s right! Your Administrative Assistant. Your fabulous AA set up you calendar reminder and confirmed your appointment, prepared your PowerPoint presentation, pulled all the data and pertinent information, prepared your report, printed it collated, made copies arranged it perfectly and professionally in presentation folders. All while s/he ordered your office supplies, made your traveling arrangements, arranged catering for your lunch meetings, sent flowers to the employee who just had a baby AND remembered your mother’s birthday and sent her flowers too, arranged pickup and delivery of those important time sensitive documents, and made sure that you did what you did best without having to worry about all the other details. So you tell us, does your Admin deserve a thank you? We think a resounding big fat YES is the answer you are looking for. Your administrative Assistants are your soldiers and you are their general. Their success is your success and vice versa. Their reward is your reward. So tell us big boss, what are you rewarding yourself….er we mean you super-duper assistant with? We have some suggestions.HW0_647405

  1. Flowers. Yes, yes, we know we are a florist and surprise surprise we would suggest flowers. Shocking! We know. But seriously, what’s more perfect? You tell us what would say “thank you” better than flowers. Nothing, that’s what. Unless you want to hand your AA handful of raw cash but that’s not classy, and we know you are one classy human. The beauty, colors, and ability to cheer even the grumpiest of humans that flowers possess is the best way to say “thank you, you are as delightful to have around as a bouquet of these blooms”. We honestly think that they are the easiest yet the perfect most excellent way to express your gratitude. Flowers are a gift that keep on giving. Win-win we think.
  2. HW0_64857Gift baskets. We understand that not everyone is into flowers. We think that’s just coo-coo, but we won’t judge. And for those that don’t get gooey feelings over flowers, we suggest something with gastronomic appeal. A basket laden with fresh, juicy and refreshing fruit with yummy gourmet cheeses, chocolates nuts and other delectable hand-picked and arranged to make the perfect gift that will make your Admin Assistant feel appreciated. In fact they will feel so appreciated and valued they may even want to share what’s in the basket with you.We told you a reward for them is a reward for you, didn’t we? You can actually throw in a bottle of wine or bubbly in there too! HW0_417674
  3. Now you are thinking, well flowers are pretty and all but might die and your sentiments of thanks will wilt and evaporate along with the blooms and the water they are in. And Gift baskets are fine but your admin is a picky eater and you don’t want to offend her/him by giving her/him non-gluten free, non-GMO, non-organic product that s/he is trying to avoid or items that are counter productive in her pursuit to maintain her/his figure. Well fine, we can work with that. We present the potted plant. This, as long as maintained well, is a gift that will last for ever and ever and ever or until that month your assistant gets too busy with organizing that conference you will be speaking at on top of his bazillion duties and forgets to water his/her plant. You can choose a fabulous blooming plant like a Phalaenopsis orchid or a melange of small green in an exquisite dish or a lush full plant s/he can put in the corner of her/his office or cubicle. Whatever you choose will send a truly lasting message of thanks for all the s/he does for you and the success of the company.
  4. 6454m_Balloon-Bouquet12-MylarPerhaps your AA just about kills every plant s/he so much as looks at and flowers are just not her/his thing and a gift basket will just ruin his/her healthy living road s/he’s on. Now what? Remember this is a day of celebration of a true professional. A party in a way. And no party is a happening party without balloons. You can embarrass (in a good way) the living staples out of your AA with happy, floating, mass of your herald of your thanks in the form of mylar balloons. Just imagine them hovering over his/her desk saying to every on looker and passerby that your AA is the BEST Admin Assistant EVER! Your AA will be the envy of the office, and rightly so! S/he works for a boss that recognizes and appreciates her contribution to her/his success. That’s you champ.
  5. AdminBlog REThis last suggestion may not feel like an actual gift, but it may be the most honest and probably the one that will truly speak the most. Literally. Either in the notes being delivered with your gifts or in person or both, tell your assistant that s/he is a truly valued member of your team. That what s/he does for you has not gone unnoticed, unappreciated and undervalued. Your AA may simply find reward and satisfaction in a job well done or may not expect or need an atta’a boy or a pat on the back for nailing that report for you. But how cool is it to just shock them  with a heartfelt thank you. We promise you that it will give your AA an extra boost to do even better for you and work with a ginormous smile on his/her face and feel like what s/he does actually makes a difference (s/he may already know this but it is good to be reminded sometimes). THANK YOU is a very powerful sentence. People take it for granted. Don’t give a passive meh-thanks-meh, but look your AA in the eyes and give him/her an honest, heartfelt, meaningful “THANK YOU”!

The key when choosing a gift think of something that that the recipient would like not necessarily what you would like. And don’t assume that the recipient is one dimensional, meaning don’t assume just because the giftee is a Redskins fan, you should get him or her Redskins paraphernalia year after year after year.

So here are some fun things that we thing are awesome gift ideas this year:

  1. Star Wars is all the craze this year and just in time for christmas we have the ultimate toy for young, young at heart, star wars fanatics and tech junkies the Sphero BB-8™ the App-Enabled Droid.

  4. While we are on the personalized theme, nothing says truly personalized like a hand made.custom made item specifically made for a special person. You know how to knit? Then scarfs, gloves, hats, duvet covers are great for those that you know will appreciate the effort. 8. To the person that seems to have everything and needs nothing give the gift of your time. This quite possibly may be the best gift you can give someone that cannot be monetized (well it can be but try not to). Just spend quality time with the person.
  9. For the health nut err we mean fanatic err we mean conscious person, a great blender for the morning green smoothie or liquid protein lunch would earn you a thousand thank yous.
  10. Lastly for that person that never has time for anything offer the gift of your help. Maybe it is to go and cook for him or her once a week. or pick up the dry cleaning or get the groceries or do the wash or any other chore the person just hasn’t had the time to tackle and has been accumulating. this is a gift that will give someone some level of peace that s/he wouldn’t have otherwise.

Your gift doesn’t have to cost you a fortune 9it can if you want, nothing stopping you) but the point is in giving your friend or a family member something you know will put a huge smile on their face and lets them know that you put some thought in the gift. And give without expectation. Their reaction is reward enough.

Avoid the Hassles of Holiday Shopping

BLOG

HW0_381522
Holiday Elegance

Yes, it’s true that the malls and stores are looking super festive with holiday decor and music and it’s fun looking at the shop windows and losing yourself in the holiday daydream they created for us. But it’s also the worst. Why, you ask? The long lines for the checkout counter, the crazy number of customers milling around on every square inch of the stores, the inability to decide between several items, the shleping of bags and coats and scarves and gloves and realizing that we only have two arms and hands. And they’re simply not enough. So as fun as it is to leisurely float from one store to another we believe holiday shopping can make our blood pressure rise higher than the loooong list of gifts we need to buy.

HW0_495756
Luminous Lilies Centerpiece

So why stress yourself 0ut when you can sit back and relax on your favorite recliner with your laptop on your lap and hot coco on the side table surrounded by the twinkling lights of your christmas tree and the wonderfully warm scent of ginger and cinnamon cookies you just backed and are now savoring. A few clicks here, a few more clicks there and bunch of clickity-clicks over there and bam, you’ll have your gifts at your door steps. And if you are one of those people that can’t wrap a gift, some stores offer the option of gift wrapping for you and have it sent to your recipient’s address. And if, like some of us, find the joy in wrapping an exquisite gift and adding the finishing touch of a pretty bow enough to make the gift recipient not want to open the gift then you can have them all delivered to you and have yourself a nice (secret) party with an array of wrapping paper, ribbons and clear tape and singing (off key if you want) “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”.

HW0_495754
Double Poinsettia Basket

When you get down to the wires and there isn’t enough time to order your gifts online and have it delivered in time for Christmas and you just do not want to be within a mile of the shops (imagine the traffic) then we are here to save the day. Nothing says “you are in my thoughts this holiday season” like a festive poinsettia, or beautiful centerpiece for the table or a gorgeous vase arrangement with winter evergreens, pine cones and beautiful fresh flowers in holiday colors of red and white and touches of gold (or any other color you want). We will hand deliver your sentiments just in time for you to look like a superstar and for your recipients to have the Christmas twinkle in their eyes and spirits. It’s what we do.

Be A Gracious Guest

Gift of Roses

So you have your boss , your in-laws, your neighbors, you friends, your coworkers, your cousin, and that guy from college are all throwing a holiday party and you are invited. It’s exhausting just thinking about it. you have work, family and your own holiday get-together to think about, you can’t possibly RSVP yes to all. Some will get a no after careful deliberation on whose party is more important and which host has a thin skin and will get offended. But there are tactful ways of saying, “sorry but I am going to Beth’s party and so won’t be able to make yours”. Here is where a good florist will make you look like you are a Grade A kind of human.

HW0_495769
Royal Holiday Centerpiece

Your presence can be felt at the party without actually being there. And you can do that by sending a token of your appreciation for the invite in a form of flowers, gift basket or plant. You can sent a holiday centerpiece for the table, a chocolate, cheese and wine basket for the host and guests to enjoy in your name, or a beautifully dresses up poinsettia to add that little something festive to the party. This will say that you, wonderful human that you are, respect the host, are gracious and appreciative of the invite and you know how to say I won’t be coming with a ton of class. Make sure to have your “Thank you for the invite” gift the day before the party or the day of not after. Unless of course you were planning on attending and just couldn’t muster the energy to change into your party frock and step our into the cool evening (we’ve all been there). In which case then make sure to send a beautiful festive flowers arrangement that says “Sorry I couldn’t make it”.

HW0_34666
White Poinsettia

Now that’s we’ve covered the parties you will not be attending, let’s move on to the ones you will be. Rule numero uno: DO NOT GO EMPTY HANDED. A box of fruit cake is better than a hand full of empty air. But us being us, we have only the best suggestions for you. Of course we believe that flowers send the best message of holiday cheer. Although we know for certain are the best option, we know they are not the only option. A good bottle of wine, a cheese tray, freshly baked cookies, cakes and other yummy sugary baked goods are also good options to bring your host. Another alternative, especially if you have some dietary restrictions, you can opt to bring a dish of something you can partake from. You can’t dictate what the host prepares (unless your host if your BFF and will know that you have peanut, shellfish, gluten allergies and are lactose intolerant). therefore, by bringing your own dish of something, you can make sure you won’t be starving if there is nothing else for you to munch on.

HW0_495717
Joy To Behold

Another way to make sure you are being gracious to your host is to help clean up. We’ve all hosted a party at some point, and we know that, no matter the size of the shindig, the clean up is quite possibly the worst part of the whole affair. Everyone is tired or went hard on the special eggnog and the prospect of having to pick up all the wine glasses or beer dixie cups and paper napkins and pie crumbs peppered all over the house can trigger a headache worse than the morning after your copious amount of wine ingested. So offer to go around with a trash bag and collect the discarded disposable plates and cups and whatever else the guests left. Trust us, this will get you HUGE brownie points and the honor of THE BEST GUEST EVER!

This holiday is not about what you get, but what you give. Even a moment of your time to help, to listen, to understand is all one needs. Offer that and have the satisfaction in your heart that will bring you unmentionable amount of joy. and have yourself a holiday season full of peace, love, laughter and the gift of giving.

When “Thank You” Is Not Enough…

HW0_197665
Tropical Twirl

Sometimes, when someone does something truly spectacular that knocks our socks off, a simple “thank you” feels inadequate. Even an “OMG, Thank you so so so much!” is sometimes insufficient. At times, we are at a loss for word and we feel anything we could possibly say, wouldn’t fully express our gratefulness effectively. This is where we need to be creative and think of a way you make the person feel like s/he is just about the best thing that’s happened to you in a long time. It’s time to show her/him s/hes the cat’s meow, the bee’s knees, the cat’s pajamas, a peach, in short the awesomest thing since kale chips.

HW0_257181
Gourmet, Fruit & Flower Basket

We’ve been taught to say please and thank you and it’s become part of our DNA. An automatic response to people when they do something for us like holds the door open for us, lets us pass first while driving, gives us a cup of coffee in the morning, hands us a news paper etc. “Thank you” “thanks” “‘preciate it”  or ‘thumbs up’; so simple that we don’t even think about them anymore. Let’s consider for a moment what we are thanking them for. Their simple acts of kindness makes a difference in our day. it may be something the person does without actually consciously thinking that s/he is doing something kind, it may be second nature, but when we do thank that person let the words be sincere. Let the person know that you are in fact thankful for the simple deed.

HW0_242773
Dish Garden 14A with Fresh Cuts

And then there are those superhero size actions that have us collecting our jaws from the floor; we need an equally grand way of showing the person exactly how grateful we are. Granted that the person may not expect anything in return but we believe that EVERYONE wants to feel appreciated. It is our duty to  make that happen. Yes, we can dedicate prime real estate on our Facebook status and go into full detail with pictures and tags and gush about what s/he did for you so the whole world know what a great human being s/he is. That great but sometimes we just need to go a step above and beyond publicly singing praises.

Do something. Something that will say “The english language (or any other language) does not have enough superlatives to fully express exactly how much I appreciate what you did for me so I needed to show you”. Something less embarrassing than a singing telegram but more expressive than a post-it note with “thanks” on it…we, of course being a florist, think flowers are a great balance. And if the person is not a flowers person (no such thing) you can send a beautiful plant that says THANK YOU FOREVER or a delectable fruit and gourmet basket. Seriously….do it. Thank someone today.

The Heroes Behind The Curtain At Work

HW0_273564
Rhodeo Drive

It’s natural that we recognize the people sitting in the big chairs behind the intimidating big tables with their names on the signature part of our paycheck. Yes they are hard working people and deserve all the recognition they get. However, have we stopped to think about the many many many administrative professional that work just as hard behind the scenes? the many bricks that make up the great wall? The ones that take care of the miniscule details to present the finish product. The ones that make sure the ‘i’s are doted and the ‘t’s are crossed. the ones that coming before the boss comes and leave after s/he leaves. the ones that keep the boss on schedule and make her or him look good. the real backbones of the company. Yes, the administrative assistants are usually the unsung heroes that, it you’re lucky enough to have chosen them right, will make you and your company a well oiled machine that runs properly towards prosperity.

HW0_582631
Recognized

This is why we believe that every year, we need to remind you to never ever forget your Admins. At the matter of fact we believe they should be thanked, appreciated, encouraged, rewarded for their hard work every day. However, as everything else, we had to have a week specifically intended to celebrate these magnificent people. We like reminding you of this day every chance we get, because, trust us, you don’t want to forget. We don’t want you to have an unappreciated or under appreciated Admin.

HW0_582632
Nine to Five

There are many ways to make sure that you Admin’s thank you tank if full. Make sure that s/he knows that her or his great work has not gone unnoticed. Say a genuine “thank you” when s/he hands you a finished work that will make your work a thousand more easier. Every so often call her/him in your office to say that you are grateful and appreciative of the extra effort s/he puts in he/his work. Your admin may work hard simply because it is in her/his nature to work hard and go the extra mile and may not expect a “thank you” or even a recognition for the work, because s/he will do it because it is his/her job. But hearing that the boss has noticed his or her toil will give him/her the extra fuel to do even more.

HW0_64857

So, we encourage you to go the extra mile this coming week to make sure that you admin know just how much you value his/her hard work. We can help you. If you are on a budget and you have a ton of admins you want to send a gift or flowers to? We’ve got you back. You have superduper admins that you know you couldn’t accomplish your daily task without their help? We know exactly what you should send.

Five Ways to Thank Someone TODAY

HW0_521179
Pleased As Punch

Saying the words “thank you” is an excellent start. But words can feel inadequate sometimes. At time, only the words don’t seem enough to fully show our sentiments for the magnitude of what someone did for us. We want something solid and tangible to make up for the seemingly light words.

Flowers never fail. Sending a beautifully and professionally arranged bouquet of bright colored flowers will alway communicate your appreciation. Flowers have a very innocent way of expressing sentiments like no other. Trust us, we would know.

HW0_247263
Around The World Gourmet

A basket of goodies. Delicious fresh fruits and delectable gourmet cheeses, chocolates, nuts and more displayed in a basket complete with a big bold bow will say “thank you” in the yummiest way. You can  include a bottle of wine or  of a bubbly too to class it up a bit (wink wink). This especially a great way to say thank you to a group of people, like to an office. Very shareable.

Take the person to lunch or dinner (choose the star of the restaurant in proportion to how grateful you are). This would be a gastronomically excellent way to say thank you to a person with finer taste of foo or a foodie.

Sent a potted plant. Live plants could be the most permanent way of saying thank you repeatedly. Weather it is a blooming plant or a green plant, the person will always remember your “thank you” every time s/he waters it or when the plant blooms or just looks at it. We recommend an orchid plant or a medley of lush green plants in a dish garden.

Social network can assist in allowing you to say thank you publicly. you can show your friends and family and her/his friends and family just how great s/he is by detailing what s/he did and thanking her/him.

These are all great ways of showing a person that you are thankful now. and we can help you with 3 of the 5 ways. We’ve got the flowers, we have the basket full of yummy goodness, and we’ve got the plants. You want to say thank you today? We can make it happen for you TODAY.

10 Habits of a Great Teacher

HW0_277816
Be Happy Bouquet

Standing in line at the check out of your local stores this time of the year, you find people with overflowing carts of “stuff” preparing for the upcoming school year. Pens in all colors of the rainbow, papers, markers, post-it notes, highlighters, pencils, tape, rulers, glue etc. Parents checking down a list of all the essentials and some not so very essential items that their child must have. Among those in line is also a teacher. Preparing for the year, buying all the things that his/her student will need to better learn and absorb all the new information he/she has for him.

Great teachers are prepared, passionate about their subject and know what a great responsibility it is to be in charge of a student’s education.

Here are 8 great suggestion that we found on Scholastic.com that can help teachers develop good habits.

  1. Give Parents as many specifics as possible about their child to show them that the student is not just one of many but a unique individual.
  2. Write positive and/or encouraging comments on the student’s work; it is encouraging to the student.
  3. Provide time updates and information to the parents about their child’s progress especially when the student is struggling with a subject or otherwise.
  4. Invite parents to participate or volunteer in class or school activities.
  5. When planning an activity that requires funding from the parents, make sure to give the parents enough notice.
  6. When a student does something positive be sure to send the parents a note. Nothing will make a parent happy than to know their child is doing well.
  7. Don’t be afraid to go beyond the dictated curriculum. This will help the student become well rounded, imaginative and creative.
  8. Have clear roles and make the consequences of breaking those rules equally clear. This will help the student understand the wrong doing, and helps avoid conflict with the parent. Read more here

And here are our two additional suggestions:

  1. Must love teaching, nothing discourages a student more than a teacher that is lackluster about his/her role in the student’s world.
  2. Understand that each child is filled with enormous potential and it is the teacher’s responsibility to help that potential blossom.

Parents, don’t forget to thank and appreciate your child’s teachers. They do more than what you could ever imagine. And, of course, flower bouquets and green plants for teacher are a delightful way to kick off the new year.
