Tired of the cold?  Ready for that lovely warm spring weather?  Start thinking about spring now with this little preview of upcoming spring events in the DC area.

The National Cheery Blossom Festival should be at the top of everyone’s list.  This amazing outdoor event takes place in March and April once the cherry blossom trees really get in bloom.  With a hundred different special events and over 200 international cultural performances, there’s something for everyone.  Of course, you can always just walk through the park and enjoy the snowstorm of cherry blossoms.

Earth Day has become more and more popular over the years, and DC hosts one of the largest Earth Day events at the National Mall.  The event features different officials, speakers, and celebrities talking about why it’s so important to save the earth.  There are also musical acts, educational displays, and a voter registration drive.

A tradition since 1972, the White House once again opens the gardens to tourists in April.  Visitors can wander through the Rose Garden, Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Children’s Garden and the South Lawn.  Various military bands will perform each day.  Note that you do need to call ahead for free tickets.

In May, the National Cathedral Flower Mart opens up.  This is a great festival for anyone who loves gardening and flowers.  There are tours of local gardens, landscape exhibits, and information about many different types of flowers.  There are also many different activities for children, including rides on a century-old carousel that has been fully restored.

For something a little more adult, head over to the Mount Vernon Wine Festival and Sunset Tour.  During the month of May, George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon home is opened up for a celebration of wine.  There are wine tastings, a tour of the mansion, live music, and an appearance by George Washington and his wife, Martha.
