The Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is offering free Mother’s Day tours from 12:00 to 5:00 pm on Mother’s Day. This historic tavern was often frequented by George Washington. Tours cost $4 for all adults who accompany Mom, and children 11 to 17 are $2. Moms, of course, are free.
The three-mile non-competitive Walk to Empower, a walk to raise funds for breast cancer research, is held on Mother’s Day. The Y-ME Organization coordinates the event. Check in is at 7:30 am, and the walk begins at 9:00 am.
Even if you’ve lived all your life in DC, you might have missed some interesting and out of the way spots. Mom might enjoy a guided tour of the nation’s capital, especially if she doesn’t visit often. There are a number of different tour groups offering special Mother’s Day tours this year.
If mom loves the outdoors, take her for a walk at the US Botanic Gardens or the National Arboretum. Both are gorgeous. The Botanic Gardens has recently updated their conservatory, so even if mom has been there before, she may get to see something new. For a really fun day, go out on Saturday the 7th and join the Georgetown Garden Club as they tour nine different gardens.
A dinner cruise on the Potomac is a nice, elegant way to celebrate Mother’s Day. While there are several companies that run river boats, there are also private yachts that you can charter. If you really want to do it up big time, rent one of these private charter cruises for Mother’s Day.
Many restaurants in the DC area will be hosting special Mother’s Day brunches. These often include special menus, champagne for mom, and more. Participating restaurants include 701 Restaurant, Art and Soul, Bastille, BlackSalt, and Bourbon Steak. Some places like Georgetown Cupcake and Sprinkles are offering great dessert specials.
Many local museums are also offering special tickets for moms on Mother’s Day.
Another fun option is to visit the Italians in DC Festival, which will be held at the Woodrow Wilson Plaza and International Trade Center. Art exhibits, winetasting, live music, and more will liven up the area from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
No matter what you do, don’t forget to buy mom a great card, some chocolates (or healthy alternative), and send her a beautiful arrangement of flowers for Mother’s Day!
