With all that goes on in our world, the chaos of traffic, the hustle and bustle of the city, the stress of work, it is important to have our little sanctuary that will help us decompress. Usually our home is that place; therefore it is important that we make our home a peaceful one. There are a few steps we can take to make sure that our home is a place that help us relax, calm down and destress.

First step is to make sure that we check the stressors at the door. You shouldn’t take the mess of the outside world inside. Work stays at work, that person that cut you off while driving is left on the road anything that makes your shoulders tense up gets left outside the door. you can pick it right up on your way out if you want, but why would you want to?

Second step is to make your home the peaceful place it should be. There are several ways you can do that. and all those ways will feed all your senses. What you see should be calming and pleasant. One way to do that it by choosing colors that promote serenity. Usual soft pastel colors help us become calmer. we can choose softer wall colors or choose furniture painting and other decor in colors that soothe us. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have bold bright colors at home, because you can and you should if those are colors you like. But have at least one room that you can go that will help you relax.

Now, we understand that we don’t all live in mansions and get to have a room for the sole purpose of relaxation. But we can all create a nook for our calming activities. It could be a reading nook where you can lose yourself in the story of your book, or a music nook to listen your music in or your crocheting nook if that’s what you are into. It doesn’t have to be a large space, the only requirement for this area is that it make you feel relaxed. it should be clutter free with only items that are conducive to your peace of mind. A disorganized, cluttered and unclean home will surely bring unwanted stress.

HW0_417678Sense of smell is very important too. Some essential oils, scented candles and air fresheners help in decluttering our mind. Make sure you have your favorite scent available. Usually the softer natural scents live lavender and chamomile are the ones that happy messages to our brain.

Natural items also help to center us and bring us a sense of calm. Fresh flowers, living plants, shells, pine cones and other items made with natural material truly help to ground us and fire up those happy feeling and memories in us. Place them strategically throughout your house or living space for optimal benefit. Places like near the entrance for you to see as soon as you walk in, in your living or family room, kitchen or dining room where you spend most of your time, your bedroom and definitely your favorite nook are the perfect places to place them.
