They say “preparation is the key to success”. Well, they are right, whoever “they” are. In our business, being proactive and preparing for any and all possible events is key to our success in serving our customers. Another industry that requires an equal measure of preparedness is the real estate industry. We are both in the business of selling dreams and satisfying emotional expectations. There are similarities in the way flowers make us feel and how a good home make us feel.

As experienced florist of 27 years, we know the power of a clean and well designed piece of art with flowers. We understand the power of color, texture and light coordination and balance. We understand what it take to catch a potential customer’s attention and delight their recipient. A realtor also understand that a well put together home or space has a potential of being sold faster than one that is disorganized and chaotic. Which is why it is important to stage a home that is up for sale.

A good designer knows that choosing the right vase, basket, lomey dish, ceramic pot and any container for the flowers is the first step in making a masterpiece. It has to be attractive enough to inspire the design of the flowers that will be arranged in it. To a realtor, the first step is to make sure that there is curb appeal to the home s/he is selling. Just like a scraped, broken, chipped or simply unattractive container would destroy the effect the flowers should give, a home with unkempt driveway or yard, or chipping paint or dented doors will render the house unattractive enough to not want to see what’s inside. Well maybe you’d want to see out of morbid curiosity. We all want to see the inside of a home that could pass for the Addam’s Family’s home but would we want to buy it? I think not.PHW_372732

A flowers designer will also have to go through all the flowers available and pick and choose the freshest and the prettiest flowers, discarding the ones that are old or damaged. Same applies to a home seller. There is no point in holding on to the broken, unnecessary, useless and old (not antique). Let it go. This will be helpful in the near future, too. When it’s time to move there won’t be any unnecessary items to pack. It’s just extra work to pack to then unpack and then deem useless and have to discard. Unless it is that chipped frame your daughter made you with that macaroni glued all around it, it’s not worth keeping. This will eliminate clutter.

Once the right flowers are chosen, the designer will go through the process of cleaning it, removing the extra foliage, dirt and imperfection to be able to create a clean arrangement showcasing the beauty of each bloom. Same concept applies when selling a home. Now that you’ve purged yourself of all the unneeded items, it’s time to clean your home. Either hire a cleaning company to scrub every square inch of the home and a painter to splash some fresh paint on the walls or make an event out of it by doing it yourself. It need to be done. Just like our customers don’t want to buy unpolished flowers, home buyers won’t be able to see themselves living in the house if their first impression is how dirty it is. An experienced artist of flowers knows the power and effects of light on flowers. S/he would know how some flowers respond to light, like how sunflowers and gerbera daisies will turn their beautiful faces towards the sun or how the colors of some flowers would look under various lights. Lighting is equally powerful to the look of a home. Keeping the windows clean and the blinds open to let natural light while arranging the furniture to compliment it will give a home a glow and present it in a positive “light”.

Knowing colors is one of the most important tools a flower designer could have. Understanding which colors complement and compliment each other will help a designer in creating the most appealing arrangement. Sometimes flower arrangements look better when they are muted or have very few colors in them and at times they look best when they have a burst of every color in the rainbow. This is also true for the look of a home. Some homes will look attractive with just a few colors with a whole lot of whites and at times they can benefit from an array of colors. Flowers evoke many emotions for the designer, the customer and ultimately the recipient. They are a visual delight, they feel wonderful to the touch and smell divine. Their colors, the way they are arranged and the message that comes along with them communicate many sentiments. Similarly, the look and feel of a house has the power of conjuring many emotions in a person. staging a home that is for sale to speak to and appeal to a buyer’s senses is important. Playing soft music, setting the temperature in the house to a comfortable setting, burning some light scented candles or introducing the scent of home goods will help the buyer feel like this house can be his/her new home or bring back good memories of their childhood.

And most importantly make sure to include floral elements to your home staging. Either a vase arrangement at the foyer or in the living room or kitchen or restroom.  A tall lush green plant in the corner of the dining or family room, or a blooming orchid plant in the bedrooms will help the home give it a welcoming feel. As we mentioned, flowers evoke many positive emotions. And when you want to sell a home you want to make sure that positivity comes with it. Especially when you are taking pictures for your website or social media site. You can up your game by making sure that there are some flower arrangements in the background. “Look at this state of the art, chef’s kitchen” and low-key show an elegant orchid plant perched by the sink.
